The public safety answering point in Timmins will be expanding its services in January. 911 operators will soon be able to receive text messages as well as voice calls as part of the enhanced service. Interim Communications Coordinator with Timmins Police Marc Depatie says the texting service will only be available to those who are deaf or hearing impaired. Depatie says this will allow those people to better communicate their needs to police, ambulance, or fire services. Those who want to use the service have to register with their cell phone provider and the police communications centre.
