Bribery charges laid in Sudbury by-election scandal

There’s a huge development in the Sudbury by-election scandal. The Toronto Star has learned that Sudbury Liberal fundraiser Gerry Lougheed Junior faces bribery charges under the Elections Act.

Facing a similar charge is Pat Sorbara, the Premier’s deputy chief of staff. The scandal involves former Liberal candidate Andrew Olivier who was asked to step aside in the by-election so that now energy minister Glenn Thibeault could run.

Olivier, a paraplegic, has phone recordings of Sorbara and Lougheed suggesting job appointments for him in return for not running. Criminal charges against Lougheed were put on hold pending the outcome of the Elections Act investigation.
