OPP will be out in full force over the long weekend

As the Labour Day weekend is upon us, northeastern OPP detachments are reminding drivers to be safe while out traveling. Officers will be out over the long weekend looking for the Big Four: distracted driving, seatbelts, obeying the speed limit and impaired driving. James Bay detachment Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio says texting is never okay when you’re behind the wheel. He says police are noticing drivers on their phones at red lights or stop signs. But, he says just because your car is stopped doesn’t mean it’s safe to text, and you could still get a ticket for it.

Mike Pilon, an Inspector with the James Bay detachment, says officers will also be out on local waterways, ensuring boaters are following laws and being safe. Boaters are also being reminded that drinking and boating carries the same penalties as drinking and driving.

Pilon says drivers and boaters can both expect the police to be out in full force this weekend.
