Minimum wage set to increase next month

Those making minimum wage in Ontario are set to get a raise come October 1st. It’s going up 15 cents an hour, from $11.25 to $11.40. For students, the wage is going from $10.55 to $10.70.

Timmins James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says the hike is step in the right direction. He says a lot of people work very hard, and yet find it more and more difficult to make ends meet. Bisson says any little bit helps as far as getting some type of increase.

However, Bisson does point out he’s not sure if it’s enough of an increase. There is a movement across the province to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. That’s something both Bisson and the NDP support. He says if the province is going to be bold, be bold all the way. He says the government should do what’s right to ensure people are making a liveable wage in order to pay their bills every month.

But, Bisson does say the 15 cent increase is a good start. He says those extra funds will stay within Timmins, so from an economic standpoint it’s not a bad thing, as the increase will inject more money into the economy.
