Timmins $5M short every year when it comes to road maintenance

Updates on what it will cost for Timmins to get all of the roads up to standard are being released following an asset management plan. The city is over $5 million short every year for the road asset budget. City Engineer Luc Duval says in order to make that up, the city would have to raise the general tax levy by over seven per cent in 2017.

Mayor Steve Black says the road infrastructure is getting older, which is causing the funding shortfall. He says that is true for all of the city’s infrastructure; water lines, sewer lines, and buildings. He says they’re all getting to the age where they need to be replaced.

Black says council needs to start considering focusing more dollars into the capital programs to get some of the facilities brought back up to standard and normal operating conditions.
