Tipping fee changes approved at city hall

The city has made a decision when it comes to tipping fees. Council had been flip-flopping on the issue, as many different options had been outlined and discussed. Mayor Steve Black says the plan that was approved this week by council was the one originally recommended by city staff.

The changes will allow any resident to dump up to 100 kg per month at the landfill for free, which works out to be 200 lbs. After that, residents will face a fee of $50 a tonne, which is about $3 for the next 100 kg of garbage.

Black says some residents are taking commercial style garbage to the landfill on a monthly basis, but using residential vehicles to do so. He says this system is a way to crack down on those who are abusing the system, by ensuring they pay fees.

There is no word yet on when the changes take effect.
