Forest fire situation is improving in the northeast

The forest fire situation in Northeastern Ontario is continuing to get better. There are currently nine active fires in the region and just a couple of weeks ago that number was doubled. Earlier in the week one new fire had been discovered in Sault Saint Marie which is not under control burning at 0.1 of a hectare. Cochrane 11 is being observed at 15 hectares and the fire in Hearst 5 is under control at just over 2,500 hectares.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is warning boaters to beware of water bombers. As the water bombers approach lakes people in watercrafts are being asked to move close to the shore so they can perform their scoop. From April 1st to October 31st waterways are used by CL-415 water bombers to suppress wildfires.

For more information on active fires go to Ontario’s forest fire website, and for safety tips go to the fire smart page.
