Public transportation and up-to-date information are part of airport upgrade recommendations

The Timmins Chamber of Commerce is making some recommendations to improve the Victor M. Power Airport. The Chamber says upgrading the airport will benefit the local economy, while making it as competitive and business friendly as possible. First Vice-President of the Chamber, Christine Bender, was at city council this week to outline their ten recommendations.

Those recommendations include introducing a flight school into Timmins, implementing a pilot project for public transportation, and enforcing the use of smoking areas. Airport Manager Dave Dayment will now take a look at all the options, and bring some costs back to council. Once that report is tabled, council will look into adding aspects into the 2017 budget.

The full list of recommendations is as follows:

  • Continue cooperation with ongoing efforts to introduce a new flight school to Timmins
  • Promote the potential to institute an on- site, self-serve reserve of fuel for use by general aviation pilots, accessible via cardlock
  • Establish a separate, premium long-term parking area with access to block heaters
  • Ensure the public’ s flight and weather information boards are consistently up to date
  • Establish an overflow area specifically to be used for short-term parking pick-up
  • Develop a pilot project to explore possible public transportation routes to and from the airport
  • Establish additional vending machine options for travelers using the airport outside of the restaurant’ s hours of operations
  • Provide airside access via coded padlock
  • Enforce use of the smoking areas
  • Conduct a review of the airport’ s emergency preparedness, including the efficiency of its current access to emergency services
