Timmins city council is taking another look at a resolution to create more accessible polling stations for those with disabilities. The pitch comes from the Municipal Accessible Advisory Committee, who says there were issues with voting during the last federal and provincial elections. For example, the gravel driveway at the Porcupine Ski Runners, or the steps to the washroom at the Croatian Hall.
Councillor Noella Rinaldo, who sits on MAAC, agrees the previous federal and provincial elections had issues. She says one of them was with parking; there were issues with locations, and with signage. In addition to that, Rinaldo says there were issues at certain polling stations that would prohibit someone with disabilities from working at that station.
The city is going to vote on that motion tonight, which will then go to the provincial and federal governments to review. It essentially says all barriers are removed, to allow everyone access to voting stations.
