Angus: Local Service Canada offices helping to boost economy

Timmins is getting some high praise from MP Charlie Angus, who recently toured the two local Service Canada offices. Angus says the large pool of educated and bilingual workers has made the community a competitive hub for stable and long-term jobs in the federal government.

He says we have really become a regional and provincial hub for federal civil service jobs. He says they do amazing work in areas like pensions and disability, and it shows the strength of the educated, bilingual workforce, which gives the city an advantage.

Angus says people often think of Timmins as a blue collar town, but that may not be the case anymore. He does say those are important back-bone jobs, but we also have a lot of really good, stable, white collar jobs. And, he says the Service Canada team in Timmins is hustling for contracts. He says we’re bringing employment into the region; where we used to see bleed-offs, it’s now a much more positive situation.

Angus says the 200-plus jobs also help to offset the ups and downs of a boom-bust economy.
