Ontario highways one step closer to getting texting zones

A Bill to create Safe Texting Zones across Ontario has passed second reading at Queens Park. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli proposed the Bill with the goal of making highways safer. Fedeli says distracted driving is the number one killer on Ontario highways, surpassing the number of impaired driving deaths for the seventh consecutive year.

Fedeli says research shows that drivers who use their phone are four times more likely to be in a crash than those who focus on the road. He also points out the risk of a collision doubles when drivers take their eyes off the road for more than two seconds.

The proposed legislation would create designated texting zones where people can stop and text or make calls. Fedeli says the only infrastructure that`s needed is highway signs telling drivers that a texting zone is coming up. Texting zones already exist in several American states.
