Day: Attawapiskat suicide emergency is the tipping point for national First Nation health crisis

Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day is asking the government to fast track their investment into First Nations. He says the crisis in Attawapiskat is the tipping point for the First Nation health crisis across Canada. Day says the cycle of poverty, poor health, suicides, and violence will continue if determinates of health aren’t immediately addressed.

Day calls the living conditions “third world”, and says the Chiefs of Ontario are outlining five key areas that need attention. That includes implementing mental health and addiction services, and ensuring access to health care. The full five key areas are below:

  • Ending the First Nation health crisis, which can only be addressed by fixing the water crisis, ensuring access to health services, and fixing health benefits for First Nations
  • Eliminating abject poverty through investments in housing, healthy affordable food, infrastructure, education and training
  • Immediately implementing mental health and addiction services to address the youth suicide crisis, prescription drug abuse, and mental wellness
  • Recognizing First Nation authority over land and resources, as recognized within our Treaties
  • Access to new technologies, such as broadband internet and green energy

Day is asking the government to work with the Nishnawbe Aski Nation to create a plan to address the health, suicide, and housing crisis.
