Crime Stoppers asking the public to not post tips to social media

Our local Crime Stoppers is asking the public to submit all of their tips to their website or hotline. South Porcupine OPP Constable Maggie O’Connor says they get a lot of information posted to social media sites, like Facebook or Twitter. However she says those tips can’t be used, because they compromise the identity of the tipster.

She says if you identify yourself, they can’t use your tip as that is their promise to protect your identity. O’Connor says they count on the public to report and help solve crimes, and it would be a shame for that information to become unusable.

The only way to report a crime is through the Crime Stoppers hotline at 705 268 8477, or online at Tip Submit. O’Connor says reporting a tip the proper way can earn you a cash reward while staying anonymous.
