Northern College names their tipi

Northern College is having a sharing circle on April 9th to name their tipi.

The name will be chosen based on the suggestions submitted by the college community.

The structure promotes cross-cultural awareness at the college and will be used as an inclusive space for cultural, community, and educational activities.

With the tipi being temperature controlled, ventilated and connected to the college President Fred Gibbons says the tipi offers a space to engage in cultural activities year round, in a way that’s true to the traditions of local Aboriginal peoples.

Traditionally, Elders in Aboriginal communities would gather when a child was born and name it together according to David Faries who will be facilitating the ceremony.

He says even though the tipi isn’t a child it’s a place to gather and meet with the spirits.

The tipi first opened in April last year.
