Council to vote on smoking bylaw changes tonight

Timmins city council is expected to vote on changes to the smoking bylaw tonight. The health unit is pitching the by-law move smokers nine metres away from any building entrance, as opposed to the current three metres.

Council has been split on the issue; some say it will help to boost air quality in the downtown core, and others say it’s unfair to business owners who pay high taxes.

The council agenda has a couple of other big ticket items on it, including a vote for a feasibility study for the proposed aquatic centre, and a report on the reconstruction of Sandy Falls Road. That project is expected to cost nearly $530,000. Council will also vote to officially install a four-way stop sign at Cameron and Wilson.

Tonight’s meeting is at 6:00pm at City Hall.
