MRCA set to revisit leash laws this week

The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority is going to take another look at the leash laws for dogs. This comes on the heels of a large social media uproar when it was stated the MRCA will be enforcing the rules that all dogs have to be on a leash on all of their properties. This includes Gillies and Hersey Lake.

However Mayor Steve Black, who also sits on the MRCA board, says those laws are in place for good reason. For example, some have stopped using the trails because they are scared of dogs, while others complain about the amount of dog droppings. Black also makes the point that some dogs will be on a leash, have an un-leashed dog run up to them, and they react unfavourably.

Black says the MRCA will be looking at what other options are out there, like potentially designating some trails as off leash. The meeting is booked for Thursday.
