Mayor of Elliot Lake says regulating gas is the key to fair prices in the north

The Mayor of Elliot Lake is joining Timmins in its crusade for fair gas prices. Dan Marchisella says he wants the Wynne Liberals to regulate gas prices across the province. He has plan which will be released at an Elliot Lake council meeting later this month. Assuming it passes, the plan will then be sent to other northern municipalities for support.

Marchisella says there is as much as a 30 per cent difference between northern and southern gas prices, with northern cities paying 95 cents a litre right now. Meanwhile, the Ottawa region is sitting at 67 to 70 cents. Marchisella says that’s just not competitive.

Marchisella’s resolution calls for a price difference of only a few pennies per litre. He will be at the Good Roads meeting in Toronto next week to talk about the plan with other northern politicians. He says if the north continues to be the squeaky wheel, bringing the fight to FONOM and Parliament, maybe we will see some changes.
