Cheap parking pass for seniors pitched at council

Timmins is looking into helping seniors stay active with discounted parking rates. The idea is to allow seniors to buy a low cost permit for the lot closest to the senior centre. Mayor Steve Black says tax responsibilities are shifting down from the province to the municipal level, which means they are collected on property taxes. That means seniors who have been living in the same home, but have a fixed income, are taking on more of that responsibility.

Black says the senior centre downtown has very limited parking in the vicinity, and this pass will allow seniors to continue to use and enjoy the centre. The request has been sent on to the parking committee, which is made up representatives from the city, the BIA and the Chamber. They will look at some recommendations on making the pass as effective as possible, and bring those options back to council.
