MNR says don’t feed the deer or foxes

The MNR is asking the public to not feed deer over the winter. Giving them the wrong foods can make them sick, it can encourage more deer to an area that a habitat can’t support, and they may lose their natural fear of humans. The Ministry says deer are designed to store fat and reduce their metabolism. Relying on artificial foods will only do more harm than good.

The MNR says foxes are naturally excellent hunters, preying on small mammals and birds. If people feed foxes, they animals will lose their fear of humans and adapt to that food source. They are also sending out a reminder that foxes can carry rabies, mange, and distemper.
