Black weighs in on the options for a new aquatic centre

There’s good and bad to both potential sites for a new aquatic centre, and it’s too soon to tell which one would be better for the city. That comment comes from Mayor Steve Black who is reacting to the top two sites laid out by Sierra Planning this week.

The first option is renovating the Archie Dillon, while the second involves building a new facility across from Gillies Lake on Highway 655. Black says the Sportsplex is a central location, but has a limited footprint. And although there is room for expansion on the highway, the soil conditions may not be ideal for building as there are mine tailings in the area.

Those are just some of the issues the consultation company will be looking at in the next phase of their study. Sierra is expected to come back to council this spring with a cost analysis and concept drawings for both locations.
