No sidewalk to Walmart in 2016

Timmins won’t be getting a sidewalk to Walmart in 2016. Council nixed the idea during a budget meeting this week, with mixed reaction from councillors. Some feel it isn’t necessary at all, while some want to wait for the Connecting Link study to come back before investing money into the road. Mayor Steve Black says that the study is essentially a reconstruction analysis. He says it wouldn’t make sense to put money into the road just to potentially dig it up a couple of years down the line when major construction is done on the highway.

Council is taking the money that would have gone into the sidewalk and instead investing it into the design study for a potential new aquatic centre. The full cost of the study is $1.5 million and council is taking $750,000 from the infrastructure fund to help pay for it.
