Timmins blood drive is consistently under performing

The Timmins blood drive is struggling to get the numbers it needs to help hospital patients. Canadian Blood Services Territory Manager Joanne Drake is asking the city for help, because they have been falling short every time they do a drive. Every week in Ontario 7,200 units of blood are needed to help car crash victims, cancer patients, or surgery patients. That means Timmins needs to collect just over 200 units every drive. But Drake says they are missing their target by 27 units every month.

Almost double the amount of appointments need to be booked for Timmins to meet the target number. Drake says there are a lot of misconceptions about who is able to donate. She says being on medication or having tattoos doesn’t automatically exclude someone from donating. Call 1-888-2-DONATE if you’re unsure, because the rules change daily and if you were deferred in the past you may be eligible now.

Councillor Rick Dubeau, who is a retired firefighter, says he has seen the need for blood first hand, and is encouraging everyone to help if they can.

The next blood drive in Timmins is on January 27th and 28th. Go to blood.ca or call 1-888-2-DONATE to book an appointment.
