Police are warning about a phone scam in Timmins

Another phone scam is being reported, and the Timmins police is warning residents to be careful. They are coming from a 1-888 phone number, with the caller claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. They are telling home owners they owe taxes, and if they don’t pay right away their car, home, or money may be seized. They then ask for payment with a credit card or a money transfer. If you get a call like this, be suspicious. The CRA will never ask for payment by those methods, usually asking for payment through registered mail.

If you’re suspicious about the validity of a call like this, contact the CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281. If you think you have been a victim of this scam, or have unknowingly given out financial information call the police at 705-264-1201 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
