News Northern Ontario MP named Assistant Deputy Speaker SHARE ON: Taylor Ablett, staff Thursday, Dec. 10th, 2015 It`s a big honour for Carol Hughes, the NDP MP for Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing. MPs in the House of Commons have named her assistant deputy speaker. Hughes believes she got the appointment because she`s always been respectful and fair during debates. She says one goal will be to make the House less partisan. MPs who serve in a Speaker capacity can`t hold cabinet positions or critic roles in order to remain impartial. However, they can still introduce legislation, something Hughes plans to keep doing. (Written by Rocco Frangione)
