Health Unit asking residents to check their whooping cough vaccination records

The Porcupine Health Unit is asking residents to check their vaccination history for whooping cough. The PHU says the disease is contagious and spread through sneezing and coughing.

The Infectious Disease Program Coordinator at the PHU, Chantal Porter says the unit is primarily concerned with the spread to infants and young children. She says in babies it can cause pneumonia, seizures, inflammation of the brain and permanent brain damage.

You can check with your local healthcare provider to see if your vaccinations are up to date.
