Northeast Cancer Centre is celebrating 25 years

The only cancer centre in the north east is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Health Sciences North’s Cancer Centre opened its doors in November of 1990.

Vice President of the NECC, Mark Hartman, says they have made huge steps forward in the last 25 years. They helped to get chemotherapy into 12 hospitals in the area, started using tele-medicine with over 7,000 visits a year, and provided radiation treatment remotely for the first in Canada.

Cancer patient, and Co-Chair of the NECC Patient Advisor Council Paulette Lalancette says it’s very important to have cancer care in the northeast. She says maintaining respect and dignity for patients means letting them make choices for themselves. That includes which treatments they want to access, and when they want to access them. Lalancette also says by having the NECC in the area, people don’t have to travel for that kind of care.

The NECC now has a long list of accomplishments, including being the first cancer centre in Canada to take part in a stem-cell transplant.
