Liberals gain ground while Conservatives take a step back

The Timmins-James Bay riding made some big changes to the way votes fell in the federal election. During the last election in 2011, just under 56 per cent of registered voters cast a ballot. This year, nearly 62 per cent voted. Across Canada, 68 per cent of registered voters made it out to the polls.

That wasn’t the only change. The Liberals gained significant ground this year, getting almost 7,000 more votes than in 2011, according to the preliminary numbers. Meanwhile the Conservatives lost ground to the tune of almost 3,000 votes. The NDP and Green Party hovered around the same numbers as in 2011.

New Democrat incumbent Charlie Angus was re-elected for a fifth straight term in the riding.
