Safety concerns about the new LED lights in Timmins are being raised online. Around 4,000 lights were switched to the new, energy-saving kind in July. The point of the LED lights was to save the city money in both hydro and maintenance fees, after there was a spike in hydro costs.
Mayor Steve Black says the LEDs are brighter and have a more concentrated light pattern, but it can leave some areas in the dark, when there is a bigger gap between the light poles. Black says that is something the city is going to look into. Additional light poles may need to be installed to fill the gaps that are causing the safety concerns.
