Be wary of a phone scam

The Timmins Police is warning residents about a Canada Revenue Agency scam. Calls are being made by someone claiming to be from the CRA. Victims are being told they have a fictitious debt, and they owe money.

Police say to make sure the call is legitimate before giving them any personal information. The CRA will never ask for prepaid credit cards, license or passport information, and will never leave personal information on a voicemail. The CRA generally sends information in the mail.

If you’ve gotten a call from a scammer, call the Timmins police at 705-264-1201 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
