Take resource extraction one step further to boost jobs, says Kennedy

Going beyond resource extraction is the key to creating jobs in Timmins. That’s what Green Party candidate Max Kennedy is saying.

Kennedy says over the last couple of decades the riding has seen a lot of job loss and youth out-migration because of a lack of opportunity. He says fixing it means doing more than extracting materials. That means taking resources like gold, iron, or timber, and turning them into value-added goods before shipping them out.

This is going to create hope for the future according to Kennedy, because skilled jobs will be created as opposed to unskilled labour. Kennedy would promote those resources with things like development grants and reduced tax burdens. He says infrastructure, like railways, would have to be improved in order to move the materials to market. He says they are better off being shipped by railway, because there is more room than transports.

NDP Candidate Charlie Angus, Conservative candidate John Curley, and Liberal candidate Todd Lever all agree that job creation and boosting the economy are the biggest issues this election.
