The Timmins Economic Development Corporation is being folded into the operations of City Hall.
City CAO Dave Landers says among benefits will be ensuring that economic development efforts follow the same direction as council.
A review of Ontario communities of similar size to Timmins shows that standalone EDCs are a thing of the past.
“They’re mostly just boards that provide advice to council,” Landers explains, “and the staffing has been integrated back into the municipal structure in almost all of them that we looked at.”
Of the 30 that were studied, only four are standalone.
Landers says a leader will eventually be recruited to replace Christy Marinig, who retired recently as CEO of economic development. Landers adds financial savings will be minimal, but other efficiencies will result.
“And I think there’s some better connections we can make across the organization, working more closely with planning, with building, with tourism that’ll be beneficial.”
