Only you can prevent forest fires from burning down your house or cottage

Several forest fires have broken out over the weekend in Northeastern Ontario.

If your home or cottage is in the bush, MNRF fire information officer Shane McCool has advice on how to protect it. It starts with cleaning up in a ten-metre radius of your property.

“By removing combustible materials, it won’t allow the fire to transfer through embers,” McCool notes, “and then transfer to the structure and in turn cause impact to the structure.

Those combustible materials include leaves and needles

“So it’s just removing any combustible material in that zone 10 m around your home can have a very high impact in reducing attacks from the wildland fire.”

For other valuable advice, McCool refers us to ontario.ca/forestfires and firesmartcanada.ca .
