Councillor proposes more free swims at Sportsplex

A bylaw proposed by Timmins Coun. Bill Gvozdanovic would increase the number of free or sponsored swims at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex.

He says that would include no charge for kids three and under for any swim.

“Currently, it’s  one and under is free,” he notes. “Transit right now is four and under is free, so I think three3 and under is reasonable.”

That would take effect immediately.  Free swims for families and seniors would begin in September.

Gvozdanovic says he’s been at the pool three days a week for the last 15 years. right now, he says, a free swim attracts 300 or 400 people.

His proposal is for a free swim every Friday night, which is not a peak time right now.

“The goal with that is, in terms of finances and economics for people, if they can get one free swim in on a Friday night, maybe they can afford to get that second swim in.”

Gvozdanovic says that could get more people into paying for swimming lessons, and make them lifelong swimmers.
