Winter storm heading our way, proving ‘March is a winter month,’ says meteorologist

Your plan to head home from Grandma’s house to end March Break might be delayed by weather,

A winter storm watch from Environment Canada says a large storm forming in the Colorado Foothills will move northeast Thursday into Saturday. Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says up to 10cm of snow could fall, even before the storm. Overall accumulation will be greatest in Timmins and points south.

“Areas further north, Kapuskasing and that area, probably 15 to 20 cm by Saturday afternoon,” Coulson says. “But as we get into the Timmins area, more like 20-30cm. And just to the south of the Timmins area, we could be looking at 30-40cm.”

A strong wind will drop visibility and make road conditions treacherous.

Coulson recaps: “The storm itself arriving in the area Thursday evening, and the concern with this storm is the duration, so continuing from Thursday evening, through the day on Friday and at least into Saturday morning, if not Saturday afternoon.”

Even though spring begins officially next week, Coulson reminds us that March is always a winter month in Northeastern Ontario.
