The Ontario Legislature’s finance committee is meeting in Timmins for pre-budget hearings, to hear what people in the north want.
Timiskaming-Cochrane NDP MPP John Vanthof is pleased about that. He says he’s always pushed to have committees travel more, because members of all parties need to experience life in the north.
“This is one way where at least they can get the feel for it,” he comments. “That’s a big part of public life, they understand where all parts of the province, how the people live.”
Vanthof only half jokingly says that people who live in the GTA that he talks to know more about Cuba and the Dominican Republic than they do about Cochrane.
“They don’t come to Cochrane for winter vacation, right? And so you know what you know. That’s why it’s really important to have government come here.”
