Health care, ‘greedflation’ and clean tech Angus’s priorities in Parliamentary session

With a new session of the federal Parliament underway, Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says he has four priorities for Northern Ontario.

At the top of the list is health care. The Speaker of the House has already turned down an NDP request for an emergency debate on Premier Doug Ford’s move towards private, for-profit care in Ontario. Angus says it will undermine the already overstressed public system.

“The pandemic really ran our public health system ragged,” Angus told an online news conference. ”There was a lot of burnout. There’s been a lot of pressure. We need to reinvigorate Canadians’ confidence in public health care.”

…And that, he says, means pressuring the Trudeau government national dental care  and pharmacare.

Cashing in on electric car manufacturing is another of Angus’s priorities. He notes that federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre – on a recent visit to Timmins – made fun of electric cars.

“I don’t know what’s so funny about this, being that the key element for (the) electric car revolution that is happening all over the world will be critical minerals,” Angus remarked. “This is a huge opportunity for Northern Ontario.”

Angus says he’ll pressure the government to invest in clean tech, so this region can kick start mineral development and job opportunities.

His other priorities for the session are what he calls “greedflation” and gouging by grocery store giants; and support for northern Indigenous communities.
