Coach thinks young curlers have a good shot at provincial U18 title this week

The coach of the under-18 girls team from the McIntyre Curling Club is confident going into the Northern Ontario provincial tournament this week in North Bay.

The foursome is one of eight teams in the event.

Coach Steve Meunier says they’ve been working since last summer, when they followed a cardio and strength training program.

“We went out to the Michener track at least once a week and did scheduled workouts” he notes,” then the girls did their own. We fast forward into the season, they play twice a week.”

-That’s once in the women’s league and once in the competitive league. And they practice once a week.

Meunier says his team has good, solid mechanical skills, understands strategy, and plays an aggressive hitting game. He’s impressed, considering that playing U-18, it’s their first provincial tournament.

“Our third stone, Natalie Graham, is 15. Deanna Chilton, our skip, is 14.  Our s3econd stone, Leanna Delich is 14 and our youngest, Kendall Chilton, Deanna’s younger sister is actually eleven.”

The winner and runner-up from the North Bay competition come to the Mac next month for the national championship.

More on both events and curling in general from Steve Meunier, is in this audio link.
