The Wynne Liberals have a chance to help Northern mining and forestry

A Northern Ontario MPP wants to make some changes to a proposed law. The Bill is known as SLAPP, which stands for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation. It lets groups say things about companies without the fear of being sued. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says its bad news, especially for the forest industry.

It would let groups like Greenpeace say untrue things, trying to hurt their bottom line. Fedeli’s change would block groups from commenting on businesses of a certain size.

Fedeli says it would exclude big environmental organizations to say whatever they want about forestry companies. At the same time, it will protect the “Mom and Pop” businesses.

Fedeli says his amendment is a compromise, and will help businesses in Northern and Southern Ontario. He has pitched his idea to the Wynne Liberals, and now it’s up to them to agree or not.
