You can meet Timmins Symphony Orchestra’s new principal cellist next Thursday

The Timmins Symphony Orchestra has hired a new staff member to be principal cellist and to teach piano and cello at its music school.

TSO director Josh Wood says Yu Pei comes to Timmins via Brandon University in Mnitoba.

“We were just really impressed with her teaching,” he says of the interview process, in which the orchestra was looking for a cellist or low-string player. “She’s very direct, very straightforward, and she just plays beautifully and she’s added a lot to the orchestra right away. It’s been really good so far.”

Your chance to meet and talk to Yu Pei comes up next Thursday, October 13th at the Timmins Museum, starting at five o’clock.

“It’s basically a welcome to Timmins for her,” Wood explains, “and a chance for people to meet her and to see her play a little bit. My office at the studio is right next to hers, so I get to hear her practicing a lot and say ‘man, she really sounds good.’”

There’s no admission charge and Wood says you can talk to Pei about cello lessons – you’re never too old to learn.
