Canada Nickel finds another big deposit in Timmins area

There is more great news for the mining industry in our region. Canada Nickel has found another huge nickel deposit that rivals its current Crawford Nickel Mine project on highway 655 near Timmins. CEO Mark Selby explains the location of the Reid Property.

“Just northwest of Kidd Creek and 16 kilometres from where we are at Crawford,” he said. “We have already delineated a deposit that’s already 90 per cent the size of Crawford which is the fifth largest nickel sulfide deposit in the world. So we’re really excited about having another major discovery of another major deposit in the Timmins area.”

Selby says the Reid Deposit is in a remote area so helicopters had to be used to get the samples.

He adds there could be a bright future for the nickel mining industry.

“The targets that we got stretch all the way up towards Highway 11 close to Iroquois Falls to Smooth Rock Falls,” he said. “Targets to the south near Gogama so the potential for the entire region it’s very very exciting.”

Selby says there is a need for nickel to power electric car batteries, but most of that supply is controlled by China and Indonesia. He adds that the car industry is desperate for new sources of nickel in North America and there is potential for the Timmins area to be a leader in supplying the product in a low carbon form.
