Vanthof critical of provincial homecare

Timiskaming-Cochrane New Democratic MPP John Vanthof is accusing the Ford government of privatizing homecare, and cutting back at the same time.

In the legislature, he spoke of a woman named Carmen, the primary caregiver for her 91-year-old mother.  She was getting two showers a week, and Carmen asked for more.

“Her Mom was reevaluated and now she gets one shower per week,” Vanthof related. “Is that an example of the enhanced homecare that this government keeps boasting about?”

Health minister Sylvia Jones replied that is why the PCs budgeted a billion dollars over three years to improve homecare.

Vanthof says Carmen now pays out of pocket for her Mom’s second weekly shower.

“This is privatization,” he said. “That PSW, the same PSW. Is that the solution? Pouring billions of dollars isn’t the answer if Carmen’s Mom only gets one shower at the end of the day from homecare.”
