Timmins will see economic impact of Kidd in 8 years

Timmins is home to one of the safest mines.

Kidd Operations has cut injuries significantly. Twenty-nine people were injured in 2011 but that number came down to seven in 2013 according to mine manager Tom Semadeni. There have been no injuries in three years at the Met site. Semadeni says Glencore is constantly striving for a zero harm work environment.

Kidd is also improving operation efficiency to stay cost-effective.

Remotely operated machines save time from the workers having to go thousands of feet underground says Semadeni. Kidd is the first mine in North America to use this technology.

However, with just about eight  years left of mining activity the local economy could be heading for a rut.

Last year they spent $57 million just on goods and services says Semadeni.

The mine is expected to close in 2021 unless they can find a cost efficient way to mine for lower grade ore before then.
