Former Cochrane South MPP dies

A one-time Timmins alderman, Cochrane South MPP and provincial cabinet minister has died.  Alan Pope was 76.

The lawyer sat on city council in 1973 and 74, before an unsuccessful attempt to move up to the legislature in 1975.  He made it in 1977 and was MPP until 1990.

Pope was first appointed to the Progressive Conservative cabinet in 1979, of which he was a member until 1990.  He was appointed natural resources minister in February 1985, weeks after supporting Frank Miller in his successful bid for the party leadership.
