Open pit tourist attraction opens today

As of 5:00pm today, the Hollinger Open Pit Lookout opens to the public for the summer.

Newmont Porcupine external relations manager Bryan Neeley says it will be open every day until September 30th.

“We will be shut down and we’ll have security going in to that lookout, making sure the public isn’t up there during blast windows. But other than that, it’ll be 8am to 8pm daily,” he explains, adding that once the all-clear is given after the twice-daily blasting, the lookout opens again.

Neeley says when the attraction was briefly opened in the fall of 2019, about four-thousand people visited. He says it was “roughed-in” at that time.

“Now it’s got all the bells and whistles up there,” he boasts. “Fully paved, it’s got some designated parking spots, a disability parking spot. There’s benches, some picnic tables. It’s a really good vantage point, even from the parking area.”

You can watch the mining operations in the pit, or turn around and get a unique perspective of the city and several landmarks surrounding it.
