Instead of burning yard waste, MNR suggests composting or landfill

It’s a hot weekend coming up, and you might be planning a spring clean-up around the cottage.

That usually means lighting a fire. Natural resources ministry forest fire information officer Evan Lizotte asks that you consider alternatives to burning.

“In order to dispose of waste or woody debris, we encourage that you use such methods as composting or using local landfill,” he suggests. “If you must burn, follow Ontario’s outdoor burning regulations.”

Those regs are at ontario.ca/forestfires.

Lizotte adds this for anyone who thinks they must burn:

“Always have tools and water adequate to maintain the fire on the site. Know the rules for safe outdoor burning.”  And remember that burning is only legal from two hours before sunset until two hours after sunrise.
