Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP says provincial budget really a campaign document

Timiskaming-Cochrane New Democratic MPP John Vanthof says yesterday’s provincial budget isn’t really a budget, because it provides no debate or vote.  So it’s a campaign document.

He does support the budget provision for the return of passenger rail service in the North; and funding for connecting link repairs in Timmins.

But he notes that by law, the budget is supposed to be delivered by March 31st, and the Conservatives criticized the former Liberal government for missing that.

“Premier Ford and at that time Minister Fedeli committed that that would never happen again,” Vanthof remarks. “and they changed the law and they did exactly the same thing that they complained the Liberals did.”

Vanthof says when asked if they would introduce the same budget if re-elected, the Conservatives were hesitant. He goes on to note that four years ago, Premier Ford said it would be easy to cut four percent from the budget. Now, the Conservatives say they’ll be the biggest spending government in history.

“We need to look at their record and the cuts that they have made and the cuts that they will continue to make if they’re elected again.”

The June 2nd election must be called by next Wednesday.
