Timmins singer selected for prestigious emerging artists summer program

A TH&VS grad studying voice performance at Western University will attend a prestigious program in Edmonton this summer, and needs help paying for it. Nineteen-year-old Briana Sutherland has been selected to participate in the seven-week-long Opera Nuova Emerging Artist Program.

Apart from classes with world-renowned professionals, Sutherland says she’ll be performing in an opera and a musical.

“I will be performing Vera Boronel in Menotti’s ‘The Consul’,” she notes, “and then I am in the ensemble for ‘Tuck Everlasting’.”

Sutherland has a recital on Sunday, May 8th at 2:00pm at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, accepting donations at the door.

HER PERFORMANCE ROOTS

Everyone has to start somewhere.  In the case of Briana Sutherland, it’s the Big Water Campground. She says she first performed at Big Water when she was about four, encouraged by her Dad.

“He would back his truck into one of my family member’s lots, and I would sing country songs on the tailgate.” That progressed to campground karaoke. Sutherland was even allowed in adult karaoke, once the kids’ time was over.
