Sikh Heritage Month flag raising an emotional time for the Sikh community

A first for Timmins: A flag raising at City Hall for Sikh Heritage Month.

Sikh community member Kanwaljit Kaur Bains says her great-great-grandfather was one of the first Sikh pioneers to come to Canada in 1897. And now the community is established in Timmins.

“The Sikh community will celebrate their Sikh Heritage Month here in Timmins from now onward, and for the generations to come,” Bains remarks.

When the flag was raised, Bains was very emotional.

“This is the first one for Timmins and Timmins has accepted us with open arms. It’s just the joy of being a family member,” she told My Timmins Now Dot Com.  “I’m a Mom, so this is my family and Moms are always emotional.”

Bains says she’s hoping that everyone in Timmins can celebrate their heritage together as a family.
