Timmins history: Rinks melt, ball diamonds thaw out, it must be spring

We’re still on sports trivia today, during our weekly look at Timmins history.

The first of two questions from museum director-curator Karen Bachmann deals with renowned hockey players taking part in a summer sport.

“What was the team of the fastball team that Frank Mahovlich, Father Les Costello and Dean Prentice played on in 1955?”

That was back in the day when fastball was the preferred summer team sport in the mining camp.

Here’s the answer: “The McIntyre Mac Men.”

“Here’s another one: When was the first night fastball game played in the Porcupine?”

As you come up with a guess, here’s a hint:  If you’re thinking it was in the 1920s, you’re wrong.

“Sunday, May 22nd, 1955.”

As always, thanks to Karen Bachmann for providing us with the material for our weekly feature on Timmins history.
