Timmins history: A couple Barilko questions

Playoffs are happening at several levels of hockey, so this week’s Timmins history feature is a couple questions about a guy synonymous with Timmins and hockey.

Timmins Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann has the first question.

“How many times was Bill Barilko on a Stanley Cup team?”

We’ll give you a few seconds to hum the music from Jeopardy while you come up with a guess.

Time’s up.

“He was four in five seasons, all played with the Timmins Maple Leafs.”

Of course, that last one in 1951 is immortalized in the Tragically Hip song “Fifty Mission Cap.”

You call it trivia, we call it history.

Bachmann has the second of our Bill Barilko questions.

“What was the name of the pilot who died in the plane crash with Bill Barilko?”

The answer is Doctor Henry Hudson, a local dentist.

That happened in the summer of 1951.  The wreckage and their bodily remains weren’t found until 1962.
